It seems like everyone knows about Matcha as a trendy beverage with great health benefits. Now it is time to move on! There are some other varieties of Japanese green tea besides Matcha. Hojicha is one of the interesting ingredient for drinking, baking, cooking and so on….
Hojicha is a green tea, but not like matcha or higher grade sencha which is made with typically first harvest green tea. Hojicha is often made from bancha which is the lowest grade of green tea. Bancha is made from the last harvest of the season. Hojicha is produced by roasting bancha or lower grade sencha over a high heat, resulting a strong toasted, nutty flavor and savory fragrance. Those unique flavor and fragrance pairs well with ice cream, latte, pudding and so on.
Since it contains relatively low amount of caffeine and tannin, you could have hojicha instead of coffee for late in the day. It can be also served cold in the summer for hydration.
We all know that matcha has many advantages to get attention easily. However, hojicha might be the option for your next interest.
